New Year’s Day Fishing Trip

January 1, 2016 11:00 am to 5:00 pm

2016! Yes, unbelievable. Start the new year off right by joining us on Friday, January 1st at the Farmington River for some festive fly fishing at our favorite tailwater. You know that New Year’s resolution that you just made to fish more this year? Here’s your chance! Meet up with your host Bill Bennett and the rest of the CVTU crew at 11 a.m. in the parking lot at Church Pool where we’ll get suited up and plan our strategy for these winter trout. The long-term weather forecast puts the New Year’s Day temperature in New Hartford at 50 degrees, so all signs are pointing to rainbows and browns in the nets. A special prize awaits the angler who catches the first CVTU trout of the year!

Recommended flies:

Warmer than usual water temperatures should mean more active trout, so your traditional Pheasant Tail and Hare’s Ear nymphs in small sizes should be staples, plus winter classics such as Zebra Midges, Brassies, and egg patterns of all sorts. Wooly Buggers almost never fail to produce, and other slowly-worked streamer patterns could be effective as well, perhaps trailed by a small pheasant tail or blue wing olive nymph. Also bring along a few tiny olives and midge dry flies (Griffiths Gnat) in case we get an early afternoon hatch.

Also, it’ll be day 1 of a new year, so remember to renew your fishing license. You can always stop by UpCountry to purchase your license as well.

Please RSVP to if you’re going to attend. See you on the river!
