Volunteer for Fall MacroInvertebrate Sampling
• September 27, 2014 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
Our fall macroinvertebrate sampling will be on Saturday, September 27th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are needed and no experience is necessary. Training will be provided and you’ll not only help our conservation efforts but you’ll be sure to pick up some tips on the bugs and the fishing on some fine local rivers.
We’ll need as many volunteers as possible to complete the sampling, so please volunteer and bring a friend. No expertise is required and we’ll partner you up with someone who has done this before.meet at 9 a.m. St John’s Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook for a brief refresher training and some coffee/donuts. All sampling will be done in teams. We’ll set out for sampling soon after training and meet back at St. John’s to hand in sample containers. We should be finished by 1 p.m., possibly earlier.
The riffle-dwelling benthic macroinvertebrate sampling is part of a state-wide effort on behalf of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to obtain water quality data. Volunteers should bring waders or waterproof boots, insect repellent, and sunscreen as needed. Volunteers under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to give consent. This is a good opportunity for those people interested in the environment to experience data gathering. Representatives from CVTU will be available to sign volunteer forms.
Should inclement weather prevent sampling on the 27th, the rain date will be Saturday, October 4th. Please contact Ann Astarita at ann [dot] astarita [at] cvtu [dot] org to confirm your attendance.
